I gathered this list of software, after years of using ..not so free software ...and slowly decided to get rid of them.
Anyway let's begin
System Utilities
Arhiver All I ever needed is 7Zip Free, fast, customizable, best.
CD/DVD Burner : CDBurnerXP Sounds old but works on Win7, is lightweight but powerfull, burns images too.
File Explorer : xplorer2 lite Alternative to windows explorer, similar to commander.
Antivirus : AVG Free Antivirus
Firewall : Comodo Free Firewall
System maintenance :
Defragmenter : Defraggler At least once a month run this on all your partitions.
SpeedFan Check your temperatures, voltages and fan speeds.
Special trick : Advanced Renamer Batch rename your folders/files/extensions. It's very powerfull and intuitive, you can use reg patterns too. Best for your music/photos collection !
Photos / Images / Drawing
Photos / Images Gallery : Picasa It cen be used as a viewer, editor, publisher, put your albums online (picasa web) or you can easily upload a screenshot and get the link to it in like 3 seconds, via quick upload.
Photos / Images quick viewer / editor : IrfanView Very lightweight, I usually use it for quick view, resize or convert between file types. Tip : install all the plugins.
Image editor : Gimp (mini replacement for photoshop, easy to use)
Vectorial drawing : Inkscape (replacement for Adobe Illustrator, is very powerfull, has portable editition too)
Video / Audio
The first three on the following lists are for all types of consumers, the next programs are only for specific jobs/tasks, use them with trust.
Video / Audio codecs pack : K-Lite Codec Pack It has everything for everyone, if you don't know what to install choose Standard installation.
Video Player : VLC Player Lightweight, best for any kind of movie, it can broadcast too, and has a powerfull sound amplification (300%).
Audio Player : Winamp I tried to use something else, but I regreted every time.
Mp3 Splitter / editor : FreeTrim MP3 Very accesible and intuitive. Works with (WMA, WAV, MP3, MP2, MPGA, CDA, OGG, etc.) and Audio CD's too.
Video editor : Avidemux Open source very light and intuitive video converter,editor,splitter etc. (similar to VirtualDub) Encode your videos (supports full HD too).
Documents / Office
Office : Open Office Free alternative to worst win office.
PDF Converter : DoPDF Convert any kind of document/picture by printing it and choose dopdf.
PDF Reader : Foxit Reader Fast and light alternative to adobe reader.
Internet
Of course heres comes the usuals : Firefox, Chrome, Opera (portable version too), Safari and best email client (beside gmail) Mozilla Thunderbird.
We will skip all instant messaging systems and recommend you Pidgin (if you, like me, hate YM commercials, memory waste).
Also see the Antivirus and Firewall (up, in System Utilities).
Gaming
We may begin with Daemon Tools (for CD/DVD images), and latest drivers.
Chat text : Usually instant messengers are replaced by irc channels, best 2 clients : mIRC and Mibbit (online)
Chat voice : Ventrilo, xFire, GSC (not tested)
Network / VPN : aka play in network, cross internet Kaboodle, Wippien, Hamachi (not so free).
Record / capture : WeGame (free, can instant upload too), HyperCam (shareware), Fraps (free is bad)
Others : MS Line Draw Font (for .nfo's) Curse client, Steam, etc
Extra / preferences
If you want to get rid of the windows default tools, you can use :
Notepad : Notepad 2 (Very simple, knows most of programming syntax, light, multiple preferences, +++)
Command prompt : (power users) See this 3 choices Alternative Command Shells for Windows
Process viewer : Process view - Shows dll used, very powerfull
Windows explorer : Explorer 2 lite (like commander)
Deffragmenter (see System Utilities / Defraggler)
I didn't get in any specific tasks / jobs , like network tools, password keeper (KeePass) or windows cleanup/hacks software
